Obesity Isn’t a Disease. It’s a Signal.
🧭 Not your fault. Not just your genes. But not an excuse either.
Obesity has been called many things.
A disease.
A genetic fate.
A failure of willpower.
But here’s the truth: none of those explanations are fully accurate—and all of them are convenient for someone else’s profit.
Obesity isn’t a simple disease.
It’s a biological signal of systemic malfunction—not in your body, but in the environment you’ve been forced to live in.
Let’s break it down.
Biology Isn’t Broken—It’s Adaptive
Your body was built to survive famine, not Uber Eats.
It evolved to store fat in times of abundance so you could survive when food ran out. The problem? Food never runs out anymore. The modern world creates constant abundance—of calories, but not nutrients. You’re surrounded by lab-designed, hyper-palatable, dopamine-triggering “foods” that confuse your hunger signals, override your satiety mechanisms, and create a metabolic fog.
Your body isn’t failing. It’s responding—perfectly—to an engineered environment designed to make you consume more than you need.
Genetics Matter—But They’re Not Destiny
Yes, obesity has genetic components. Certain genes—like FTO or MC4R—can make you more susceptible to weight gain. But in traditional societies, those same genes don’t lead to obesity. Why?
Because genes load the gun, but environment pulls the trigger.
The rise in obesity didn’t happen because our DNA changed—it happened because our world did. More stress, less sleep, less movement, worse food, and a culture that commodifies everything—including your body.
The Disease Label Is Both True and Misleading
The American Medical Association declared obesity a disease in 2013. On the surface, that sounds like progress—removing stigma and creating access to care. But dig deeper and it also does something else:
It helps pharmaceutical companies sell you drugs.
It helps insurance companies code your condition.
It turns your body into a revenue stream.
Obesity is not just a disease. It’s a socially constructed medical category—profitable to treat, impossible to cure, and useful for deflecting responsibility away from the culture that created it.
Capitalism medicalizes the damage it causes and then monetizes the illusion of healing.
The System Is Sick—Not Just You
We work jobs that don’t move our bodies.
We eat food that doesn’t nourish us.
We scroll screens that keep us stimulated but unfulfilled.
We sleep less, stress more, and live on artificial rhythms.
David Graeber said it best: modern society creates “bullshit jobs” to justify its own inefficiencies. I’d take it further: it also creates bullshit consumption—meaningless, addictive, endless. And obesity is the logical endpoint of that loop.
This isn’t about personal failure.
This is about cultural design.
💥 So What Is Obesity?
Let’s be clear:
✅ It’s a biological response to unnatural inputs.
✅ It’s genetically influenced, but not genetically doomed.
✅ It’s exacerbated by modern systems, not caused by your laziness.
✅ It’s a signal, not a sentence.
Obesity is how the body says:
“I don’t understand this environment.”
And that’s not a cue for shame.
It’s a cue for awakening.
🔄 Reframing the Narrative:
You don’t need another drug.
You need a deprogramming.
You don’t need a new wearable.
You need to reclaim your instincts.
You don’t need shame.
You need a map back to your own biology.
This is what my upcoming book—The Weight of the World—is about. It’s not a diet book. It’s not about guilt. It’s about truth: how the modern world hijacked your biology and how to take it back.
